Quick funny Lubbock story: Ever since we moved here we've heard city officials on the news making a big deal about a new measure designed to penalize those who run red lights. At selected intersections throughout the city they've attached cameras to stoplights and the cameras take pictures of the license plates of cars that run the red lights so that the police can mail them citations (think Photocop, those of you from Utah). They've had the cameras working for about 3 months, I think, and last night on the news we were pleased to hear that traffic accidents around town are down around 5%. While proponents of the stoplight cameras are quick to attribute the decline in accidents to the cameras, the news story was quick to follow up with these stats:
-Total crashes at intersections with red light cameras increased NEARLY 50% from the same period (without the cameras) last year.
- Rear end collisions at those same intersections were up OVER 90%.
Apparently, the cameras are doing their jobs. Instead of running the red lights, we're now causing traffic accidents which block traffic, thereby ensuring that NOBODY will even make it THROUGH the intersections for the couple of hours that it takes to clean up the accidents. Mission accomplished.
