Weekend Update...

A quick update on our weekend. First off, there's always soccer! I didn't post any pictures of Justin on the field because the game went much like last week (I think we won by 10 points). Instead, here's a picture of a really cute soccer mom and her handsome second-in-command. Let's face it: Fall is in the air. I say this despite the 90 degree temperature we had today and the lack of any trees with leaves that will turn autumn colors. Texas leaves a lot to be desired in the autumn department. But I've talked to family and friends who tell me that somewhere in the world temperatures are dropping and leaves are turning shades of red and orange, so darnit, we're going to celebrate Fall, which of course means readying ourselves for Halloween.
Our Halloween cake, made by me, decorated by my wife, and inhaled by my two children.
This is just a small portion of the ghoulish decorations we've put up. Notice on the mantel no less than 3 skulls, two gargoyles, two mummy candles, and a nice (but ghoulish) autumn garland. Take that, Texas! You can't keep us from the best part of the year.

I know I've said that there are a lot of things about Texas that we don't like. This isn't because it's a bad place, but because it's a lot easier (and more fun) to complain than sing praises. So we're going to start including some of the better things about being in Texas in our posts. In that spirit, here's one of the things that I like about Texas: It's got great watermelon. Seriously, I've eaten about three pounds of it in the last two weeks. We get it from a farmer's market down the street a little ways. Juicy, delicious, and full of flavor. So, Texas pride, you've got it all wrong. It's not the cowboy hats, the belt buckles, and certainly not the bumper stickers you should be pushing... it's the sweet, sweet watermelon.

Of course you've already decorated for Halloween! ;-) That reminds me that I should get out our fall decorations. I guess I sort of forgot it was "fall" 'cause it's still over 90 degrees here most of the time! It HAS been cooling off though. We get to open up the window at night and in the morning and it's actually cooler outside than inside!! :-) It's amazing how we take such a small little thing like that for granted. But it's such a wonderful thing to have that fresh cool night air to breathe while we sleep! :-) Hooray for the change of seasons!

Aren't you surprised we didn't decorate earlier?!? I figured if the stores here in Texas already have their Christmas decorations out, it was just fine to decorate for halloween ;-) I really miss opening up our windows at night...but Lubbock has a really high crime rate so the windows stay shut :-(

What fun Halloween decorations. My kids are already begging me to carve pumpkins, but with the temperature being what it has, they will rot WAY before Halloween actually arrives. I'm sure it's the same there too!
